Program Overview

Despite the annual release of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended vaccine schedule, vaccine coverage rates for adults are well below 100%. There are a variety of reasons for this, including lack of access to healthcare; lack of information about vaccine availability, safety, and efficacy; misconceptions about who needs to be vaccinated; and lack of communication between healthcare providers and patients.

This activity looks at the adult vaccine schedule in terms of how medical offices and clinics can work most efficiently to improve vaccine coverage rates. The program features three tracks: one for the physicians who run clinics and write orders for vaccines; one for the nurses, physicians assistants, and other personnel who actually administer vaccines; and one for the office staff who maintain records, schedule appointments, and often receive and store shipments of vaccine. Specifically, this program addresses barriers to vaccination; the utility of standing orders protocols, which are recommended by the ACIP for some vaccines; changes to the 2009 adult vaccine schedule; patient provider relationships, including elderly patients; reminder systems; travel vaccinations; and proper handling, storage, and administration of vaccines.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians treating adults, geriatricians and ancillary healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify 3 barriers to a standing orders vaccination program and identify possible solutions to overcoming barriers.
  • Describe all changes to the 2009 adult vaccine schedule and recognize how these changes affect clinical practice.
  • Evaluate a patient undertaking international travel and communicate necessary immunization information to that patient based on dates and locations of travel.
  • Evaluate an elderly patient and identify the appropriate ACIP-recommended immunizations for that patient.
