Addressing Cardiometabolic Risk in Military and VA Populations

Abstract
It is the responsibility of the United States Armed Forces to provide the U.S. with security and to defend it against the enemy. In order to carry out this vital mission, members of the military should be in optimal health and free of the major illnesses that affect the civilian population. Ideally, military personnel should have low rates of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, which collectively are 2 of the most prevalent diseases affecting society. Unfortunately, there are many active and retired military personnel who have these diseases, placing a great burden on the military and VA health care systems. As with civilians, a better understanding of the risks, causes, and treatments for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases is necessary for appropriate management of personnel in the armed forces; for an unhealthy military may equate to an unsafe situation for Americans in the U.S. and abroad. |
